STARS  is Transport for London’s travel plan accreditation programme.  It provides a framework and guidance for schools to put in place a travel plan and rewards their achievements and commitment to encourage active and sustainable travel such as walking, scooting, cycling as well as the use of public transport.

School Travel Plans (STPs) are developed through a partnership involving the school, the Council (in particular transport and education), the Police and the health authority and are used to manage traffic and transport across the borough.

Why King’s House School participates in STARS

We know parents are keen to encourage healthy lifestyles, school and local communities are keen to reduce traffic congestion around their schools and children want the opportunity to walk or travel to school with their friends.

By developing and implementing our School Travel Plan we aim to encourage pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle, give them the skills and confidence to travel safely under their own steam and help them understand how their actions will make a positive contribution to the future of our environment.

Participating in active travel, such as walking, scooting and cycling, on the way to school brings plenty of benefits including:

more awake and alert pupils in the classroom
improved air quality and local environment around the school due to reduced numbers of cars in the roads around           the school
more reliable journey times for staff, pupils and parents
improved road safety and awareness skills
greater familiarity with the local environment.
