Year 6 Trip to The Royal Observatory, Greenwich
The Year 6 are studying the topic ‘Earth and Beyond' so we all trekked our way across London to visit the planetarium and astronomy galleries.
The planetarium was fantastic. Think of it as a tour bus of the Universe taking you on amazing journeys to explore and experience the wonders of the night sky. Images from spacecraft and telescopes are all projected onto a fully immersive dome.
We were also lucky enough to see the 28" telescope which was completed in 1893 and is the largest of its kind in Britain. (See photo below).
When I asked the boys which part of the trip they enjoyed most here are some of the answers:
"Seeing the Harrison clock"
"Touching the Gibeon meteorite", which is 4.5 billion years old.
"Standing on the Prime Meridian" where you can place one foot in the eastern hemisphere and one in the western (see photo below)
And of course there was this answer "Rolling down the hill during lunch break!"
I really enjoyed looking around Flamsteed house designed by Sir Christopher Wren and it was completed in 1675 at a cost of £520!
It was a privilege to take the boys out for the day and learn about Astronomy in buildings steeped in history.
