Kings House School Trip to Orleans Gallery

Trip to Orleans Gallery

On Wednesday 4th November, a group of 14 selected boys hopped onto a minibus to Orleans Gallery. When we arrived we were introduced to our own exhibition tutor, Megan.  Firstly, she led us to the Gallery.  Generously, we were permitted to tour the Gallery freely.  The name of the exhibition and theme was ‘Domestic Design'.  There were some odd objects, some useful and some just for observation and admiration.
After this, Megan showed us back to the coach house workshop.  She explained to us that we were designing tables.  At the thought of it everyone thought it was boring.  How wrong could we be!  To get our ideas warmed up, she showed us a slideshow of different chair styles.  Why chairs?  Because if the slideshow was on tables, we would be copying and it wouldn't look as though we had designed them ourselves.  Worksheets were handed out, and we enthusiastically got started.
Before each section of the worksheet, Megan would patiently explain to us and clarify the questions.  These questions were crucial to the design of the table, because the question was about colours, features and categories your room fell into.  I think the most exciting parts were the designing and monoprinting sections.  For the monoprinting, it was basically placing papers (cartridge and tracing) on the front and back of the worksheet.  Then we had to place it on a board full of thin paint.  The colours varied between each board.
Pencils, spatulas and paint brushes were laid out for use.  To put paint onto your design you had to use the papers and trace outlines or brush the paint onto your design from behind.  We worked really hard and the hard work paid off as there were some outstanding designs.  It was a great day out.  So we would all say a big thank you to Mrs Lane-Roberts and I hope you enjoyed this article too.
