NEWSLETTER 12TH DECEMBER

Dear Parents

One of the things which make a Preps school education so very special is the huge range of activities on offer to the boys. At no time is this more evident than at the end of a term. The Year 5 and 6 production was wonderful.  Everyone of the 92 boys was fully involved and enjoying every minute.  Well done for a fantastic team effort to all the Senior staff involved, but a particular well done and thanks to Mr Follant for the music and to Mr Allen, directing his first King's House production.  I know they both put a lot of extra time and effort into getting the play to such a high standard.
The Junior Department Christmas concerts reduced us all to tears as always. The boys knew their lines so well and they sang their hearts out.  I know all the parents there were amazed by how well they did.  I would like to join Mrs Bruce in saying a huge thanks to all the staff of the Junior Department for such a glorious celebration of Christmas.
Well done to the chess team who won their fixture this week and to our 1st XV rugby team for their win at Hall Grove.
The choir start their celebration of Christmas this evening, when they will be singing around the Christmas tree in Richmond town centre. I hope to see some of you there. It has been a busy week for us all.
Next week sees the Senior Department Carol service at St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond which starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday night. This is just a reminder that all Senior Department boys should be at the carol service in their school uniform. The church does get very busy so please give yourself plenty of time especially with the current traffic problems.
A week to go and not a present bought........!
Congratulations for Distinctions this week go to; Elliott McCall, Tobey Rutkowski, Alasdair Parkinson, Will Davison, William McGowan, James Silver, Duncan Lees and Ben Madelin.  William Miller, Finn Burbanks and Harry Bass who have two.  Congratulations also to Elliott McCall, William Miller, Thomas McGowan who all have 100 credits and James Silver who has 200.  Well done!
Mrs Stephanie Piper

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT

I don't think that we have ever had such a busy week in the Junior Department.
Saturday was such a lovely afternoon and we were all thrilled with the success of our Christmas Fair.
This week we have had two rehearsals and two performances at St Matthias' Church.  I am sure that you will agree that our concerts were very special indeed.  We are very grateful to the staff of St Matthias who make us so very welcome. I am so proud of all the boys who have patiently sat through all the performances their behaviour has been exemplary. Well done everyone.
On Wednesday afternoon the boys visited Richmond Theatre to see a performance of Peter Pan.  Great fun was had by all. Thank you to those parents who came with us at very short notice.
Exciting news for the Buckle family with the arrival of Mrs Buckle's first grandson a huge 10lb 6oz. Congratulations to all.
We still have calendars and bags to sell. Please support us by purchasing these super items. Calendars are now reduced to £10. All proceeds to Royal Marsden.
Congratulations to the following boys who have gone into the GOLD BOOK this week: Ruben Fraser, Max Hales, Hugh Pearson, Sebastian Kennell, Henry Benett, Connor Burns, Monty Jones, Jude Mohally, Henry Gibbens, Anthony Mallett, Felix Reimnitz, Louis Lynagh, Thomas Eyre, Oliver Sheen and Alex Hail.

NOVEMBER
By Henry Shalders 8K

Grey,
That is what November is.
As the sky stretches out
In a melange of blue grey
Casting a bleak shadow,
On a bleak world.

Cold,
That is how November feels.
As the cold engulfs us and
The wind tears at
Our bodies, our faces, our noses.

Anticipation
That is November's sense.
As boys wait for exam results
Some desolate, others exuberant.

Empty,
That is how November seems.
Tree's empty,
As leaves fall,
As our world falls.

Gone,
That is what November is.
As the days fly away.
As a train covers track,
And like all trains November has arrived,
At its next stop,
December.

Dear Father Christmas
Have you had a good year?  Please may I have a Wii and please may I have a Wii game and please may I have a Lego Batman Play Station II game?  If you can't bring some then it doesn't matter!

OUR VISIT TO THE SYNAGOGUE
On Wednesday, we went to the Kingston Synagogue.  First, the Rabbi showed us into the inner Synagogue.  He introduced himself and his helpers.  He then talked about the Torah and read a few lines.  He then had to go to a funeral so his colleague took over.  They showed us prayer books and then one man blew the Shofar horn which he said was very hard to blow.  We walked around the Bimah and looked at one of the five Torahs.  We also looked at the Seder Plate.  We then went back to school.  It was a beautiful Synagogue and a great day out.
By Jack Livingstone 6U

When we got to the Synagogue a man showed us a diagram or symbol of the Kingston Synagogue.  We went into the prayer room and sat down.  The windows were stained glass.  We saw the five books of Torah and other items.  He told us about the Jewish festivals.  It was an Orthodox Synagogue.  I had a great time.

Christmas is officially here! The trees are set up around the school and we have the Christmas fair on Saturday.  I look forward to seeing you all there.
A huge thank you to four Year 8 boys who raised £330 for Rwanda by asking for money instead of presents and giving it all to Rwanda Aid.  Matthew Bamping, Luke Storey, Matthew Jones and Ned Wright.  A generous gesture which will be very much appreciated.
As some of you may know Mrs Reindorp is retiring at the end of this term after 14 years as Head of Art  here. We will be saying our proper goodbyes at the end of term, she will be much missed. Mrs Shirley Gough, who is returning from teaching in South Africa, will be joining us in January.
Well done to our rugby boys and to their parents. The touchline is freezing at the moment but the King's House support is as strong as ever and the boys are certainly setting us up as the team to beat.
The House points total in the Senior Department is getting very close so very well done to all the boys who are handing in their credit cards at the moment.

NOVEMBER
By Matthew Weinberger 8K

The air shivers
Cold winds present an icy greeting.
Frost embraces the ground
As a friend, but takes its warmth;
Discarded as worthless to him.

The leaves mimic us as we curl up,
Protection against the cold;
They crinkle into brown shapes.

Breath builds as a cloud
From a mouth.
Its disperses;
Cold wind hates our heat.

With all he can he blows chill breezes at us
Teeth chattering and goosebumps bring out
Coats, warm coats.
For what he has done
Has ruined his own effect.

The air still shivers.

Years 1, 2 and 3 went to the poppy factory in Richmond for a talk and tour.  We all learnt something new about this unique factory and 2A have written some lovely thank you letters.

Dear Poppy Makers
I loved watching the machine making the poppies all on its own.  I learnt something new which is that the leaf points to 11.00 o'clock.  We stop and remember the soldiers at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.  Thank you for my visit.
From Hugh Pearson 2A

Dear Poppy Factory
I loved making my own poppy and seeing the machine that made two thousand poppies an hour.  Thank you for showing us around.  I loved seeing the Royal family wreath.

NEWSLETTER 28TH NOVEMBER 2008

Dear Parents

Boys from Years 4, 5 and 6 joined many other pupils around Britain to take part in The Big Sing on Thursday.  The aim was to see if the world record (of 293,778) for people all singing the same song at the same time could be broken. King's House boys certainly did their bit and the singing of Des'ree's "You gotta be" was lovely.  Hopefully a lot of money will be raised for Clic Sargent and Marie Curie and the record will have been broken.

The rugby season is underway and already we have added to our silverware. Very well done to the boys who played so well at the Hall Grove tournament on Saturday!  Let's hope this is a taster of things to come.

Congratulations this week for Distinctions go to Thomas McGowan, Henry Masters, Henry Kitson, Jeb Moore, Thomas Panay,  Jay Hansjee, and Alex Fiorenzoni who have one, to Ben Madelin, Matthew Gardener and Eric Fiorenzoni who have two, to Conor Symes who has three, Charlie Peach who has four and Ben Broyden who has five five.  Ben Madelin, Matthew Gardener, Conor Symes, Christopher George, Oliver King, Jamie Sayer, Ben Broyden, Duncan Lees and Charlie Peach all have 100 credits for their House.  Well done!

Mrs Stephanie Piper

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT
Boys and staff enjoyed 1T's assembly last week about London.  The boys told us lots of interesting information about this wonderful city and acted out the story of Guy Fawkes. They ended their assembly with a delightful rendition of ‘Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner'.  Well done everyone.
Please may I ask parents not to bring hot drinks into school. With so many precious little chaps about we need to ensure their safety, and avoid all potential risks. Thank you.
Please ensure all scooters are folded and left neatly. Where possible please take them home with you. Thank you.
Boys must have their jumpers and track suits in school, every day. Fleeces may be left in school. All outdoor coats should be NAVY BLUE and of an appropriate design. Woolly hats are available from the school office.
Our lovely school Tote bag is on display in the lobby and will be available at the Christmas Fair.  If anyone is unable to attend bags can be purchased from the school office at £5 each. Raffle tickets can also be bought for £5 for a strip of 5.

OUR VISIT TO THE POPPY FACTORY
When I went to the poppy factory I learnt that you probably need over a billion poppies in a year.  The poppy factory use poppies because it's like the bullet and blood.  They also use poppies because they grew in battle fields.
Someone named George opened the factory for the soldiers that were still alive from the wars.  Wounded soldiers worked at the poppy factory and George built flats behind the factory for the families of the soldiers.
The Queen has her own wreath and so does the Duke of York and the Duke of Edinburgh. They lay wreaths on the 11th day of the 11th month on the 11th hour and there is a two minutes silence to remember the dead.

1st XV FIXUTRE
On Saturday the 1st XV had their first run out of the season in the Hall Grove 10-a-side tournament.  This was a tournament that we had won last year, but had doubled in size, making it a much harder task this year.  The boys cruised through the group stages in second gear, winning all the matches easily, picking up bonus points in all the matches and without conceding a point.  We faced Eagle House and Wellington College's Prep School, in the semi-final and to our shock and horror we conceded a try in the first few minutes.  This galvanised the lads to push up into top gear and we quickly ran away with the semi-final, leaving Eagle House battered and bruised.  The final was a game that will stay with me for many years.  We played Cranmore School and although it was only 8 minutes each way, we won 46-0.  The team played with the perfect mix of beauty and the beast.  The beauty came from the handling, the running lines, the teamwork and the tries.  This was matched with a determination to smash the Cranmore boys in the tackle and the ruck.  The boys walked away with the Hall Grove Trophy for the second year running and showed me that it is going to be quite a year ahead.  On Wednesday we head off to the Wellington College tournament and there will be a large number of teams very worried at the thought of playing King's House.   Squad - Spain, Peplow, Shalders, Gloger, Peirson, Lockhart-Smith, Coleman, O'Hara, White, Pilcher, Micklewright, Green, Carr, Martin.

NEWSLETTER 21ST NOVEMBER

Dear Parents

The exams in the Senior Department are over and the newspapers are full of Strictly Come Dancing stories - Christmas must be on the way!  All the boys seem to have coped well with the rigours of the exams and the staff are now wading through their piles of marking. Boys will be given their exam marks next week, along with the year average for each subject. The feedback on the papers happens in class, as it is most important that the boys know where they went wrong and what they can do to improve on their mark. Parents of boys in Years 4, 6, and 8 will get a chance to discuss the boy's performance at the forthcoming parents evenings. Year 5 and 7 parents will get a report at the end of this term. If you have a particular concern then please contact your son's form teacher or drop me an email. Once the exam feedback is over we move on in our lessons; papers do not go home to parents and we use the feedback to inform our future planning.

I was delighted that Mr Chaplin was able to come into school today. The news in Britain from Rwanda has not been good, so it was wonderful to hear that the projects are still able to go forward despite the difficult times. Those who are interested can subscribe to the newsletter via the Rwanda Aid website.

Congratulations to the following boys for reaching 100 credits; Alasdair Parkinson, Henry Masters and Marcus Duncomb.

Foggy Predators
It dives down like an eagle attack.
It prowls around like a dog hunting it's prey.

My feet reappear.
The fog has gone.

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT

We all thoroughly enjoyed watching Reception W's class assembly last week. It is hard to believe that these little chaps have been in school for such a short time. They all remembered their lines and spoke out beautifully. Well done everyone.

The recorder club continues to flourish under Claire Cheetham's patient tuition and I was very impressed with their performance during assembly recently.

We were delighted to welcome a representative of the Peter Pan cast into school. Year 2 boys enjoyed a super Pirate workshop and entered into role play with great enthusiasm. A good time was had by all. All boys will be attending a performance of PETER PAN on Wednesday 10th December at The Richmond Theatre. Boys must be collected from the theatre. We will advise you of the time as soon as we have heard from the theatre.

Thank you so much for your wonderful support of our recent Book fair. We have been able to buy books for every classroom with the commission we earned.

Form reps will be emailing you all with details of our Christmas Fair following our meeting this week. We are still in need of contributions for the toy stall; please no videos. Also if anyone has any empty jars that we could use do bring them into school and pass onto Mrs Trundley. Thank you.

A NOTE FROM MRS PIPER
It has come to my attention that someone has been giving out leaflets advertising tuition outside school. As most parents know we do not encourage extra tuition for pupils. Boys who are working hard should not need them and, in many cases, extra tuition causes more harm than good. That being the case I do think it worth stating that a good tutor is recommended by word of mouth and is very busy. Anyone can hand out leaflets or advertise saying they can offer tutoring and you have no reassurance of their competence in any way.  Please be wary.

As from Thursday 27th November all gift wrap orders will be available for collection. Senior Dept orders will be available for collection from the lobby area. Junior Dept orders will be distributed around the classes.

NEWSLETTER 14TH NOVEMBER

Dear Parents

With exams looming next week it is lovely to see the boys so enthusiastically involved in so many other areas of school life.  We had the most wonderful after school tea concert on Wednesday afternoon, with boys of all abilities taking part.  It certainly cheered up a wet Wednesday afternoon.  I have seen some outstanding Art work this week, particularly from the Year 7 boys who have been working on projects based on their visit to the tree top walkway at Kew.  The rugby season is upon us and I know you are all looking forward to cold, damp Saturday mornings on the touchline and we have squeezed in a chess match between our A and B teams.  All that and still time for revision!

Next week is National Anti Bullying Week so we are taking the opportunity to look at our school behaviour policy and talk through our expectations with the boys in class and in our assembly.  I am always delighted when I visit Senior schools to hear that King's House boys take with them high standards of politeness and good behavior.  It is certainly a very important part of education as a whole.  I am always looking for examples of good behavior and good manners and was delighted when one of our younger boys held a door open for me, without being asked and then said, "you're welcome" when I thanked him.

Congratulations for Distinctions this week go to; Joshua Binder, Matthew Gilman, Tommy Fokianos, Alfie Green and George  Kitson.  Congratulations also to Harry Jackson, Harry Berry, George Parsons, Alfie Green, Will Davison, Jamie Bell, George Kitson and Freddie Turley, who all have 100 credits.  Well done!

Mrs Stephanie Piper

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT

We were delighted to welcome Agnes from The Royal Marsden Hospital on Monday who gave the boys a presentation about the work the hospital does to help sick children. She told the Boys about ‘Captain Chemo', a super hero who helps raise funds to help the doctors. Boys were invited to become Cadets to help. We will be selling T-shirts for the hospital. They are on display outside the office and can be ordered through Mrs Smith.

Thank you and well done to Ted Johnson who very kindly donated his birthday money totalling £90 to Rwanda Aid.  Also, to Alexander Cartwright, Christopher Conway and Alessandro Angelucci who joined forces and raised £200 from their birthdays. Bravo boys! It is not too late to buy your copy of our super Rwanda Cookery Book. Please let Mrs Smith know if you would like a copy.

The boys enjoyed a fabulous performance of ‘The Ugly Sisters' performed by Changing Faces Theatre group. Years 2 and 3 participated in a lively drama workshop in the afternoon.
I was delighted to receive a phone call from Pools on the Park congratulating our Year 1 boys for their exemplary behaviour during the two minutes silence on Tuesday. Well done everyone.

The Junior Department will be having a blitz on GOOD MANNERS for the next two weeks. We will be focusing on behaviour in school, in the playground and at mealtimes. Please help us by encouraging your son at home. Boys will be able to earn housepoints and stickers for super behaviour and courtesy both to adults and other pupils.

Please bring in any spare jam jars to school for our Jam and Chutney stall. We are collecting some extra Bonne Maman jars for you to fill. They will be available in the lobby.

CONGRATULATIONS to the following boys who have gone into the GOLD BOOK this week: William Owen, Joseph Beeching, Felix Reimnitz, Callum Williams, Alfie Foster-Black, Samuel Edwards, Charlie de Waal, Monty Hamm, Robert Bradley, Oliver Sheen, Luc Broyden, Kit Moore, Andrea Angelucci, Max Owen, Callum Thomas, Hugh Pearson, Benedict Wilkinson, Percy Scott, Ben Fitzgerald, Ben Proddow, David Offer, Christopher Behnert-Lackner, Freddie Compton, James Danford, James Trotman, Rupert Hagen, Sebastian Kirdar-Smith.

SATIPS
SONG FEST
During half term a group of KHS boys attended a Song Fest at St Paul's

The day started off in the musical department of St Paul's School where we all met up.  There were a mix of uniforms - schools like Ravenscourt Park, Devonshire House and The Prince of Wales School.  We met musical composers in the theatre.  We learnt a range of different songs from Christmas songs to songs about kestrels!  We had to do a warm up and it involved moving back and forth in tune.  Then we were handed over to a man called Alan Simmons.  He was amazing!  We were taught a different version of the song Infant Holy, Infant Lowly.  It was beautiful.

The acoustics in the hall were fantastic!  All the schools sounded great together.  It was time for lunch.  Everyone was nervous about the big performance.  We played a game of bulldog in the fields with some Colet Court boys.  Then we went back into the hall and went over all the songs for an hour and a half.

It was time for the show.  All the parents were in the lobby and everyone was excited.  We entered the theatre and started off with our warm up.  It was a fantastic start.  Then the Prince of Wales School performed a song about an emergency on a train.  Next we sung our song  "The Kestrel" which the parents loved.  About five minutes later we listened to one of my favourite songs of the performance.  It was by a school that had come all the way from Lancashire.  The highlight of our day was Alan Simmons's song called "Call Us".  It went fantastically.

If I had to sum up the whole day in one word it would be "extraordinary."  I think the King's House choir has something to say to Mr Follant.
"THANK YOU"

NEWSLETTER 7TH NOVEMBER 2008

Dear Parents

I start my letter this week with a huge thanks to the Friend's Association for the fantastic Quiz Night before half term. Once again it was a great evening, with slick organization and some tricky questions from Mrs Steel.  As it was also the AGM that night I would like to echo the thanks of Mrs Kerr to all the committee members and form reps who give up so much time on behalf of their school. Your efforts are much appreciated by the staff and the boys.

It was a busy half term for many at King's House. There was a hugely successful Classics trip to Rome for the older boys, a rugby coaching weekend in preparation for the season and nine boys took part in the Satips Songfest.  The boys involved thoroughly enjoyed these events and learned a great deal and I am very grateful, as always, to the staff who gave up their time to organize and run them.

A note for Senior Department parents, homework next week will be some form of revision in the subject set therefore boys have been advised to build their revision timetable around their prep.

Congratulations this week for Distinctions go to; Nils Raber, Henry Shalders, Nicholas Frost and Max Greenbury who each have one, to Marcus Patterson and George Bishop who have two and to Charlie Thompson who has three.  Nils Raber, Alastair Jackson and Max Greenbury have 100 credits for their House and George Bishop has 200.

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT

Year 1 enjoyed a super visit to the Science Museum this week. The boys visited the New Launch Pad where they enjoyed lots of hands on investigations. The Bubble Theatre was a great hit and they also visited the Water Garden. There is always so much to see and do at these fantastic museums. Staff were delighted at the way the boys behaved, which is always lovely news.

Congratulations to the Houghton family on the birth of their new baby girl, born just before half term.

A correction to my note earlier this week, we are now collecting for the toy stall and contributions can be brought into school from next Monday.  Please make sure everything is in good condition. Thank you.

We had photographs taken in school this week. The boys looked very smart indeed. The proofs will be with us in good time for orders to be filled, ready to send out with Christmas cards!!!

It is now time to fill up your BON MAMAN jar with novelty gifts or sweets.  Examples are on view in the entrance lobby - one jar per family please. Any spare jars can be returned to school for jams and chutneys. Thank you as always for your kind support.

CONGRATULATIONS to the following boys who have gone into the GOLD BOOK this week: Alexander Riches, Max Hales, Alessandro Angelucci,  Arjun Bhat, Jamie Kirkhope, Ollie Corbett, Declan Shine, Edmund Kenny, Henry Kinsley, Teddy Monro-Davies, Alex McVey, Hugo Rich, Jasper Gentry, Leo Hales, George Gale, Lewis Merchant, Ben Holker, Paris Benjamin, Thomas Rogan, Saul Edward, Thomas Lynagh, Glasson Osborne, Cameron Kelly, Freddie Chapman, Alexander Coulson, Crispin Jackson.

KING'S HOUSE SCHOOL ITALY TRIP 2008
By Cameron Spain 8K

For one week of the October half term holidays, Mr Shore, Mrs Blackgrove, Mrs Barnes, Ms Keylock and  Mr Picknett took 44 Year 7 and 8 boys to Italy.

On Monday evening, after spending all day travelling, we quickly set off into Rome guided by Mr Picknett, our fluent Italian speaker.  We went to see the Trevi Fountain, where we all threw in our coins and the Spanish Steps before returning to the hotel.

The following day was our big day in Rome and we kicked off our sightseeing with the thing everyone was looking forward to the most:  The Colosseum.  We all had high expectations for the Colosseum and I'm sure they were all lived up to.  It was just amazing to think that the Romans were able to build something on such a large scale 2000 years ago and we still walk around it today.

Then we came to the Circus Maximus, and although there were no remains of the original building, you could still see where the track used to be and you could easily imagine that what is now a steep slope was once where, 2000 years ago, spectators would be cheering on the charioteers.

We also visited the Pantheon with its enormous and incredibly well preserved dome before having some authentic Italian pizza in the lively Piazza Navona.

Last but not least we visited the Vatican City where we were lucky enough to go inside St. Peter's Basilica and admire the grand domes and beautiful works of art.

The next day we drove by coach to Sorrento and from there we visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Capri.  Pompeii and Herculaneum were two places devastated by the eruption of Vesuvius, and it was very interesting to see all the well preserved theatres, amphitheatres and shops to find out about the Roman way of life.

After a tiring walk up Vesuvius, we went to see the massive crater and it was interesting to imagine how much taller the volcano was before the eruption.  We also took a ferry to the island of Capri where we went for a long walk up the steep hill and when we got to the top, we were able to take in one of the best views in the world looking out to the sea.

And then, all too soon, our week in Italy had come to an end it was time to return home after a much enjoyed trip.
