NEWSLETTER 5 MARCH

Dear Parents
Thank you all so very much for your wholehearted support of the Rwanda run.  We reached Rwanda and we have raised an outstanding amount of money.  I am still counting the sponsorship money and we are well over £13,000 at the moment, which is absolutely incredible.  The enthusiasm and determination of all of your boys was just wonderful, as was the positive attitude of everyone who took part.  I will write a longer report, which will go out via the form reps this weekend, however huge thanks to all the boys and parents who took part but especially to my team of organisers, to all of the staff and to the marshals on the day.
So after the rain and mud on Saturday we had rain and more mud on Sunday at The Nationals.  The U13's played some excellent rugby and we were delighted as a school to be able to host the competition at The Civil Service Grounds.  Mr Simpson did a great job of pulling the day together and our catering team kept everyone well fed and watered.
This week in school we have had mock examinations for Year 8.  Year 7 are enjoying a week in France and the rest of the Senior Department have been treated to science week with visits from snakes, dragons, rabbits and various other beasties.  A prospective parent was slightly worried when we overheard one boy saying, "Have you been to see the dragon?"  In the Junior Department they celebrated their book week with a tremendous range of exciting activities.  King's House boys are never bored!
Distinctions this week go to Aurelius Zwick, George Gallop, Calum Holker, Dominic Matthews, Danny Stephens and Edward Bradley who each have one.  Thomas Panay, Tom Davison, Will Freeman, Nils Raber and Ben Madelin who have two Distinctions.  Matthew Gardner has three, Lennie Wells and Luke Hamilton have four!  Thomas Panay, Dominic Matthews, Tom Davison, Nils Raber, Edward Bradley, Lennie Wells and Luke Hamilton have 300 credits for their House.  Aurelius Zwick, George Gallop, Sebastian Law, Charles Turner, Will Davison, William Freeman and Ben Madelin have 400 credits and Matthew Gardner has 500.  Well done!

FROM THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT
First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone from the Junior Department who came to the Run to Rwanda last Saturday.  All the boys were amazingly positive and hugely successful despite the rain and mud!  All you JD parents were absolutely superb too and the school is so proud to have exceeded the target of 4,500 miles!  Well done everyone.
1T have also done a fantastic class assembly this week about a mixed-up chameleon.  The assembly was lovely with all the boys performing beautifully and their rendition of the song Que Sera, Sera was absolutely enchanting.  Thanks to Mrs Trundley and Mrs Hurley for producing such a super assembly.
We have also all enjoyed celebrating World Book Day with a fabulous assembly at the beginning of the week from Mrs Dean as well as a wonderful dressing up day on Thursday.  Well done parents for sorting those costumes; the boys looked fabulous and have really enjoyed guessing the teachers behind the books on our display.
I am very much looking forward to seeing you all next week at the Year 1 and Year 2 productions and at the Parents' Evenings; I shall, of course, be here for those evenings and am always delighted to see you should you wish to discuss anything further after your meetings with staff.  Please remember, communication is all and I am here to help!

NOTES FROM THE NURSERY
What a fantastic atmosphere there was in Richmond Park on Saturday.  Thank you to everyone for your enthusiastic support and tremendous efforts in spite of the wind and rain.  Congratulations to Jack Shephard who, at three years and one month, was our youngest runner, well done Jack!
This week we have been learning about working dogs and looking at the important roles of police dogs, guide dogs for the blind and rescue dogs.  We have discussed different breeds of dog and read stories from doggie favourites Hairy Maclary, Spot and Kipper.
Our quote of the week this week comes from Dodi "I really, really, really would like to have a dog, but Mummy's having a new baby so I suppose we'll have that instead!"

SCIENCE WEEK- Earth and its Wildlife
For hundreds and millions of years animals have lived on land, the seas and the skies of earth.  From insects to mammals, all are vital threads in the web of life that sustains us all.  Did you know that one fifth of all known mammals and twelve per cent of all known birds are threatened with extinction?
This week we have looked at controversial topics such as; wild animals should stay in the wild, using animals in scientific research and habitat destruction for crops.  Many thanks to Charlie McManus-Burke, Theo Byrne and Ms Golightly for bringing in their unusual pets.  The boys were privileged enough to feed and hold a Bearded Dragon, Russian Pygmy Hamster, Leopard Geckos, Corn snake and everyone's favourite, Petal the Rabbit.
The winners of the daily competitions were Adnan Karimjee, Sam Corbett and Harry Gibbons.  Well done!
