Latin
Latin is studied at King's House by all boys in Years 6, 7 and 8. We use both the Cambridge Latin Course and Disce Latinum text books. As well as focusing on the Latin language, we also enjoy studying the Romans. In particular, the way they spent their leisure time at the amphitheatre, theatre, baths and Circus Maximus. We also read the most popular and well-known of the Greek Myths; those of Perseus and Medusa, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Hercules, Theseus, Odysseus and the Trojan War.
Once a term there is a Latin Reading Competition held in assembly, where the best readers from each year group compete for prizes. We have been lucky in recent times to have these competitions judged by the Head of Classics from both Hampton School and Lady Eleanor Hollis.
Every other year there is a trip organised to Italy, where we spend time in Rome and Sorrento. We visit, amongst other sites, the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican City, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Capri. You can read more about this recent trip elsewhere on the website. The 44 boys and 5 staff had a wonderful time.
At the end of Year 8 all King's House boys sit either the Common Entrance examination or the Scholarship examination in Latin. They do King's House very proud.
