Kings House School Admissions

Admissions

General Arrangements

  • King's House is a non-selective, mixed ability school.  We do not recognise any differential right to our services other than those itemised below.
  • Priority is always given to brothers of present pupils, provided they satisfy the other entry qualifications.
  • Boys are offered places in order of registration.
  • All places offered after the Reception Year will be subject to a test to ensure the boys are of similar standard to the group they would be joining.  The School reserves the right to refuse a brother if they feel that it would not be in the boy's interest for him to join the school.
  • Places are offered up to a maximum of 42 boys in the Junior Department age groups and up to a maximum of 54 boys in Senior Department age groups.
  • In the first half of the Autumn Term, vacant places are offered to be filled immediately or in January.  After the Autumn Half-Term, vacant places are normally offered for the following September, but they could be taken up earlier.
  • New boys are only admitted in exceptional circumstances after the beginning of Year 7.
  • Following these guidelines the Head offers places by letter to the parents.  There is a provision in the letter that the offer lapses if it is not accepted within a fortnight.   Two copies of the Parent Contract are sent.   Parents accept the offer by signing one copy and returning it with the committal fee.
  • The Head may advise parents of existing pupils with severe learning difficulties that King's House cannot provide a satisfactory education for their son.   The criterion for this is whether the boy can cope with class teaching with the support of up to two half-hours per week of special needs help.
  • Admission of any pupil is at the absolute discretion of the Head.

Registration

  • Throughout the term, on Friday mornings, there are Visitors Mornings, usually about 4 each term. These events are particularly for parents interested in their sons joining at 4+.  At these events parents are invited to arrive at 10.00 am to be met by the Head, the Head of the Junior Department and the Registrar.  After a short welcome from the Head the Year 8 boys act as guides and show the visitors individually or in pairs around the school. The Head and Head of the Junior Department are available throughout the morning to answer any queries the visitors may have.   Parents who are only interested in their son joining the Senior Department are seen individually by the Head.
  • A boy is formally registered when the School receives the completed registration form and the registration fee.

4+ Entry

  • In May, 16 months before entry, the Registrar writes to the parents to ask them to confirm that they are hoping to be offered a place.   We also invite them to a special Visitors Morning for their year of entry.
  • If there are any vacant places in the first half of the Autumn Term they will be offered to boys on the waiting list to be filled immediately or in January.  After the Autumn Half-Term the places will be offered for the next September but they could be taken up earlier.

Entry after the Reception Year

  • If there are any vacant places in the first half of the Autumn Term they will be offered, subject to testing, to boys on the waiting list to be filled immediately or in January.  After the Autumn Half-Term the places will be offered for the next September, but they could be taken up earlier.
  • These parents are invited to bring their sons into school for testing by the Head or the Head of the Junior Department as appropriate.
  • After consultation, the Head writes to the parents with the result, offering a place if appropriate.
  • The Head acknowledges receipt of the Contract and the committal fee.  She will tell the parents when they will next hear from herself or the Head of the Junior Department.

8+ Entry

  • A year prior to entry the Head writes to all parents whose sons are registered for entry at 8+.  In this letter she explains the entry procedure and invites boys to sit the November test.

  • Approximately a week after the test the Head writes to parents either offering them a place or not.

Race Relations

Admission decisions will be made on the basis of fair and objective criteria.  The School's selection procedures are reviewed from time to time to ensure our objective is met and to avoid unlawful discrimination (cf to School Race Relations Policy).
